For the first time in the history of the American Silver Eagle, the United States Mint has unveiled a change in the design of the coins in the silver and gold range. After an exhaustive comparison of as many as 34 different designs to possibly replace the John Mercanti image of the heraldic eagle. In the end, the US Mint and the Secretary of the Treasury selected a design from Emily Damstra that reimagines the American bald eagle on the reverse. The new design for the coins reverse starting in 2021 includes:
- The powerful American bald eagle is depicted flying back toward its nest with its wings spread out behind its figures and its talons clutching the branch of an oak tree, almost as if the bird is working to build its nest with that branch. The inscriptions remain the same as previous American Silver Eagles and are arranged with United States of America along the left and top design rim, with One Dollar and 1 oz Fine Silver inscribed along the right and bottom design rims. Just above the weight and metal content is an interior inscription of E Pluribus Unum.
The release of a new design on the reverse of the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Eagle in 2021 is not random. The 2021 release of the coins marks the 35th anniversary of the series and marks the perfect time for the US Mint to transition the visuals on the coin to help the Silver Eagle continue to dominate well into the 21st century.

For professional collectors and traders, you want coins that are MS or PF. Other grades include AU, F, VX, VG, XF, G, PO, AG, and FR. The lowest quality coins are ungradable and smudged. You may also see Plus Grades for coins between 45 and 68 on the Sheldon scale.

The American Silver Eagle is a silver bullion coin, issued by the United States Mint from 1986 to the present. It is struck only in the one-troy ounce, which has a nominal face value of one dollar and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver.
The Silver Eagle was produced in three mints. Philadelphia, San Francisco, and West Point. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Silver Eagles iconic design had been a public favoriteperhaps the most beloved in the history of U.S. coins.

What Year Is The Most Valuable Silver Eagle
The most valuable silver eagle is the rare 1995 W American Silver Eagle: 10th Anniversary Proof. This coin was produced and sold only as part of the 10th Anniversary American Eagle Proof Set.
This coin was only available in the Tenth Anniversary American Eagle Proof Set, which also included the four 1995-W Proof Gold Eagle coins in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz sizes, along with a 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle.
In recent years, the prices of Proof Silver Eagles graded by NGC as PF 70 Ultra Cameos have surged. The most expensive example ever sold was an ultra-rare 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo, which went for $15,000 at auction.
On March 31, 2013, the PCGS PR70DCAM example of the 1995 W American Silver Eagle Proof realized $85,654.70, making it the most expensive American Silver Eagle ever sold at auction.
Effect Of Recession On Availability 20082010
As a result of the global recession, the demand from investors for bullion coins as a hedge against inflation and economic downturn surged. This increased demand began to affect the availability of American Silver Eagle bullion coins in February 2008 when sales to authorized dealers were suspended temporarily. In March 2008, sales increased ninefold from the month before . In April 2008, the United States Mint began an allocation program, effectively rationing Silver Eagle bullion coins to authorized dealers on a weekly basis due to “unprecedented demand”. At least one observer has questioned the legality of the allocation program, as the Treasurer of the United States is required by law ) to mint and issue these coins “in quantities sufficient to meet public demand”. On June 6, 2008, the Mint announced that all incoming silver planchets were being used to produce only bullion issues of the Silver Eagle and not proof or uncirculated collectible issues. The 2008 Proof Silver Eagle became unavailable for purchase from the United States Mint in August 2008 and the 2008 Uncirculated Silver Eagle sold out in January 2009 .
Production of the 2010 Silver Eagle bullion coins began in January of that year and the coins were distributed to authorized dealers under an allocation program until September 3.

MS70 Graded Silver Eagles – PCGS / NGC – Which Years are High Prices
The obverse design is originally from the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin, in production from 1916 to 1947. Adolph A. Weinman was the designer. The iconic portrait of Lady Liberty striding on a landscape touched by the sunburst of a rising sun, with the wind blowing Her gowns and the American flag wrapped around her shoulders. She has Her right arm stretched forward, as she leads the way to a brighter tomorrow while holding branches of laurel, celebrating the countrys achievements over the years on her left hand. The word LIBERTY adorns the outer rim on top, while the mint year appears on the lower face of the coin. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST, present in all American coinage, appears right behind Lady Libertys legs.
The initial reverse design was created by John Mercanti, the twelfth Chief Engraver of the US Mint. He depicted a spectacular heraldic eagle, with its wings wide open and a stripped shield on its chest, the great seal of the United States. The eagle grasps a bunch of arrows and olive branches on its talons, representing the countrys readiness for war, but the desire for peace. The bird holds a thin banner on its beak with the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM. Above the eagles head are 13 five-pointed stars, representing the original colonies. Finally, encircling the design, are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR.

Some collectors want to have a full set of coins for display. They may not be worried about the value of the individual coin they just want to have them all. Plus, in a few decades, complete sets could be worth a lot. So if thats your goal, you can buy most coins for $100.
Lots of online sellers will give you the option of, say, a 1998 or 1996 coin at that price. But if youre seeking a particularly rare year, you may have to pay more. This 1986 coin costs a little more. It was the first year the coins were released, so they may appreciate as time passes.

S American Silver Eagle: Burnished Uncirculated $184000
The 2011-S Burnished Uncirculated American Silver Eagle was the first silver eagle minted in San Francisco since 1986. This coin was produced as part of a 5-coin set commemorating the 25th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle.
Only 100,000 of these sets were produced and this is also the same number of coins minted at San Francisco at the time. An uncirculated version of this coin is worth $310. The melt value of the 2011-S Burnished Uncirculated American Silver Eagle is $23.67.

Types Of American Silver Eagles
While the first decade of production saw a relatively staid lineup of ASEs, with conventional bullion quality and proofs struck each year, in 1995 the West Point Mint struck a limited number of proofs for inclusion in the 10th anniversary gold eagle set. The 1995-W silver eagle with the W mint mark was struck as a free bonus inclusion with the anniversary set, and only 30,125 were made. The 1995-W proof quickly became popular with collectors, serving to this day as the rare regular-issue key date to the entire series.
Since the first decade of the 21st century, ASEs have been struck in several other numismatic varieties, including reverse proof, burnished finish, and enhanced uncirculated. Striking duties for bullion-quality pieces originally went to the Philadelphia Mint and early proofs came from the San Francisco Mint. However, minting assignments have changed over the years, with Philadelphia striking proofs for a period in the 1990s and the West Point Mint assuming the vast majority of ASE production by 2000.

In 1986 the United States Mint began striking new silver and gold annual coins. Representing the silver side are American Silver Eagles. Through to the middle of 2010, the mintage total for the silver dollars is over 230 million coins.

Mint Facility And Mint Mark Changes Throughout American Silver Eagles Series
Proof American Eagle production facility and mint mark by year
From 1986-1992, American Silver Eagle Proofs were minted at the San Francisco facility and included the “S” mint mark. From 1993 through 2000, they were produced in Philadelphia and held the “P” mint mark. Since 2001, Proof Silver Eagles have been minted in West Point and have the “W” mint mark
Uncirculated American Eagle production facility and mint mark by year
Outside the Burnished Uncirculated coins which have a “W” mint mark, all Uncirculated American Eagle Silver coins have never had a mint mark.
From 1986-1988, Uncirculated Silver Eagles were minted at the Philadelphia facility. From 1999-2000, they were produced in both Philadelphia and West Point.
Since 2001, the Uncirculated Proof Silver Eagles have been produced solely at West Point. Again, with no mintmark.
W American Silver Eagle $258500
The 2008-W Reverse of 2007 Burnished Uncirculated American Silver Eagle is one of the rarest Silver Eagles. This variety of silver eagles is one of the most valuable. Having one of these would fetch you a good amount of money.
You can spot the difference between the Reverse of 2007 vs Reverse of 2008 by looking at the image below. Note the differences between the tildes in the words silver and one as well as the difference between the U in United.
Its also worth noting the general differences in the styling of all letters as well as the spacing between lettering and rim.

Mintage Of American Silver Eagle Coins
The United States Mint has different mintage approaches for the uncirculated, proof, and burnished versions of the coin. Under the guidelines of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, the US Mint is legally obligated to meet the demand for the uncirculated version of the coin. The bullion American Silver Eagles mintage figure is determined entirely by demand for the investment grade coin. The highest mintage figures in the program through its first 20 years came largely from the first two years of availability, but the Great Recession sent the American Silver Eagle soaring higher. The coins peaked in 2015 when 47 million Silver Eagles were issued in a single year.
For the proof and burnished versions of the coin, mintage figures are different. The Proof Silver Eagle originally had mintage caps at times, though it rarely achieved a full sell out in a given year. Eventually, the US Mint abandoned the mintage caps and simply struck the coins to meet the demand from collectors. With that said though, the Proof Silver Eagle has never reached the heights of the uncirculated version of the coin. The highest mintage figure for the Proof American Silver Eagle remains the 1.4 million sold in 1986 when the coin debuted.
